Villains in Film: This course will focus on villains and antagonists in film. The Joker and Batman, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter; heroes are made by the villains they overcome. Antagonists are key to understanding the central themes and conflicts of a film, and great villains are often the most compelling characters in a story. We will review common villain tropes in literature and film and screen examples from a wide range of genres. Students will discuss and practice analyzing the themes and aesthetics of cinema villains with reference to the specific social and historic contexts that gave rise to some of the most memorable characters in movie history. Major assignments will include a short comparative essay and a final poster presentation. |
