授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
The aim of this reading course is to examine different threads and ideas prevalent in Japanese culture.  Threads originating in historical times that are still present, if even in a hybrid form, will be the main focus. Some such threads may include harmony, respect, mindfulness, concepts of religion as well as others. Materials used will come from translations of original works as well as journal and academic writings.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be in English and active / “Learner-centered” in nature.  Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, and active participation in discussions will be essential.  Students will be required to write reflection papers and take quizzes intermittently throughout the semester.  Assessment will also include group presentations on themes chosen by the students at the mid-term.

/Before After Study
1 Course introduction, Review of spring term A review of the themes discussed in the first term will be conducted. Students will choose topics for further investigation during the term.
2 Reading 1: Overview and Discussion The first topic will be from theme found in pop culture. Students will complete worksheets about the reading.
3 Reading 1: Discussion and Reflection Students will complete the article and discussions regarding it. Students will summarize the article and write their opinion about it.
4 Reading 2: Overview and Discussion The second topic will be regarding the world of "Manga" and a theme found within Manga. Students will administer questionnaires about manga among their peers.
5 Reading 2: Discussion Students will continue to read an article about Japanese Manga. Students will analyze their findings from their questionnaires among their groups.
6 Reading 2: Discussion and Consolidation Themes in Manga will be reviewed and a final discussion on the topic will be conducted. Students will prepare group presentations for the following week.
7 Mid-term Group Presentations Groups will introduce Manga with an emphasis on Japanese culture themes. Students will write reflection papers on their presentations.
8 Reading 3: Overview and Discussion Students will examine humor as found in Japanese culture. Students will complete worksheets about the reading.
9 Reading 3: Discussion and Reflection Students will examine Japanese styles of humor . Students will write reflection paragraphs about their thoughts on Japanese humor.
10 Reading 4: Overview and Discussion Celebrations and festivals and their importance in Japanese culture will be introduced. Students will complete worksheets about the reading.
11 Reading 4: Discussion Students will continue their discussions of festivals and celebrations based on the reading. Students will determine their theme for final presentations.
12 Reading 4: Discussion and Consolidation Importance of festivals and celebrations will be summarized. Students will work in groups for their final presentations.
13 Group Presentations (1): Presentations will be given on a topic of each groups' choice based on the readings in this term. Students will prepare a reflection paper on the readings of this term.
14 Group Presentations (2)/ Course Consolidation Presentations will be given on a topic of each groups' choice based on the readings in this term. Students will review the topics covered in the term.
