授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course will focus on developing listening and speaking skills. Controlled short conversations and listening exercises will be used to help build confidence among the students. After working in controlled situations, students will be encouraged each lesson to practice speaking and do paired conversations beyond the controlled topics while developing and advancing their speaking and listening skills. Listening practices will focus on various topics with an academic focus. | ||||||||||

This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term. ***ZOOM will be used for speaking and learner-centered activities to enhance speaking and communication skills. If you are unable to use ZOOM or are concerned about using ZOOM, please contact the Instructor so alternative ways can be considered |

Students will be expected to work on expanding their academic vocabulary based on the various themes of each unit. On-line listening will also be assigned for each unit. Education Central will also be used as supplemental material. | ||||||||||

1 | Orientation, Course Guidance, Introductions | Students will work on self-introductions and note-taking techniques. | Students will prepare vocabulary for Unit 1 on international relations and geographical locations. |
2 | Unit 1: International Relations - The Pacific Rim | Supporting details to back up facts will be the focus of the unit. | Students will prepare a short presentation on a country in the Pacific Rim. |
3 | Travel | Students will practice talking in pairs about travel experiences and destinations. | Students will review vocabulary for environmental problems and population. |
4 | Unit 2: Environment - Population | Recognizing the purpose of lectures and discussions will be the focus of this unit. | Students will prepare a short presentation on either population growth or environmental issues. |
5 | Family | Students will practice talking in pairs about families and relatives. | Students will review vocabulary for discussions about space exploration. |
6 | Unit 3: Space - Unmanned Travel | Recognizing the purpose of lectures and discussions will be the focus of this unit. | Students will prepare presentations on various aspects of the ISS. |
7 | Computers and Drones | Students will practice talking about computer and smart phone use as well as drones. | Students will review vocabulary used in the study of anthropology and sociology. |
8 | Unit 4: Anthropology - Human Society | . The use of definitions in presentations and discussions will be introduced. | Students will prepare a presentation on a sub-culture they are interested in. |
9 | Pop Culture | Students will work in pairs and groups talking about various aspects of Japanese pop culture. | Students will review vocabulary used in discussion exploration. |
10 | Unit 5: History - The Age of Exploration | The importance of supporting evidence in discussions and presentations will be reviewed. | Presentations on a favorite explore will be prepared by the students. |
