In this course, we will take a look at the cultural history and background of American comic books. In class, students will improve their critical thinking and discussion skills by taking a closer look at American comic book culture while comparing it with its counterpart in Japan. How are American and Japanese comic books different? What are the cultural and historical influences that have resulted in these differences? Each week, students will learn about a different aspect of U.S. comic books while discussing and presenting on influences such as immigration, censorship, gender, and fan culture and activism.
