授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This one-term required class teaches second-year students how to read more effectively and then presents them with the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions successfully in group and class discussions while working with topical subjects.
Overall Objectives
1. To teach students the skills involved in effective group discussion
2. To improve reading comprehension skills using topical reading material
3. To develop verbal reasoning skills together with the ability and opportunity to communicate their thoughts related to the topics and readings provided
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Students will be shown examples of ways to ask & answer English questions. Then, students will be invited to produce their OWN spoken replies to similar questions/similar situations...and to explain a LOT, in modern, high-EQ English. English pairwork will be requested, so that classmates can get to know each other better.

Please do homework assignments as soon as possible (the same day; or the next day). Waiting until the
last minute to do assignments/homework (‘ichiyazuke’) is NOT a good way to prepare for classes.

/Evaluation
The instructor will use the ongoing assessment technique. You will be assessed often, on: how well you participate in class; how well you speak and elaborate (explain) in English, the ways in which you reason (think); how well you use the information taught to you; how well you work together with other class members; and so on.

Your grade will be tentatively determined by: ongoing class assessments (approximately 35%); class participation (20%); and homework/test(s)/presentations (45%).

1 Introducing yourself to new people. (*Note:This is a tentative weekly schedule.) Introducing yourself to new people, with pair practice.
2 Review of Introductions. Hometown/ Residence now. Review/ practice of Introductions. Asking students about their hometowns; & where they live now.
3 "What are your plans for Golden Week?" "What are your plans for Golden Week?" (explaining in Future tense English)
4 Mother's Day plans. Mother's Day plans; & Mother's Day video/song-listening activity.
5 Student hobbies. Student hobbies, and explaining thereof, in smooth, Modern English.
6 Discussion of recent International News. Discussion of recent International News articles and videos, in English.
7 Speaking your opinions, in modern English. Speaking your opinions, in natural, smooth, modern English.
8 "What kind of _____ do you like?" "What kind of _____ do you like?"; discussing kinds of music, movies, food, etc.
9 "What kind of _____ do you like?", part 2. "What kind of _____ do you like?", part 2: further practice, re: kinds of books, places, people, etc
10 "What do you usually do _______?" "What do you usually do ___?":explaining what you commonly do when you catch Cold/ get depressed/etc
11 Discussion of recent International News. Discussion of recent International News videos and/or articles.
12 Train directions. Asking for (& replying to) questions, re: Train Directions.
13 Train directions (continued). Further practice with train directions.
14 Plans for Summer Break. Discussing & elaborating, re: Plans for Summer Break.
