授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives |
This course is designed to help students interested in language and language learning to better understand the English language. In this course we will look at the story of language, taking in such topics as how language is used in different situations, concepts that can help us to understand language better, and where language can be found around us. By reading and discussing the text material, including pre-reading assignments to enhance the reader’s comprehension, and post-reading exercises to expand and elaborate the concepts and to help students to think in ways similar to the ways linguists think, it is hoped that students will come away from this course better prepared to meet the challenges and questions one might encounter in the language classroom. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course |
One chapter from the text will be studied each week. The first part of each class will be used for reading and analysis of the text material. This will be followed by reviewing and checking the homework assignments together. For the remainder of the class students will be given an in-class exercise to complete. Note that the teaching method, text material covered, and assessment style may change due to the demands of the ongoing health situation. Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class or in a message prior to the first class. | ||||||||||

Instructions and weekly assignments will be given and collected on Manaba. Students will be required to complete the assigned reading and homework assignments each week before participating in class. These assignments will be due the day before class on Manaba. | ||||||||||

Grades are based on assignments and in-class participation (60%), projects and/or supplementary exercises (20%), and a final assessment based on the text and lecture (20%). | ||||||||||
