授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
The aim is to give students a course in “film and and American culture”, as they might experience at a university in an English speaking country. The course examines American culture and society through film. Time will be spent in class watching and critically analyzing films, as a window onto American culture and society. The two themes covered in the autumn semester are: “The American Dream in American cinema” and “Justice and Social Justice in American Cinema". We will watch films from a variety of genres and eras in relation to these two themes. Each film will be watched in its entirety over two weeks, and will be shown in class in English without Japanese subtitles. The films provided on the schedule are a tentative list and may be changed during the course. | ||||||||||

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
For 2021, this class will be conducted in a hybrid format. We will study each film over two weeks: First week- Online. Students watch the films on their own and complete tasks online through the course website, and suggest questions about the film to discuss the following week. Second week- In class. Students will discuss the film and work on some listening activities together while watching some clips from the film. All films and tasks will be available to students through a course website. The first lesson will be conducted in class. A detailed schedule and information about the course website will be provided at that time. |

Readings will be assigned and students need to write film reviews and reports for each film shown in class. At the end of the course, students do an independent study report on a film of their own choosing. |
