授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This course will focus on developing listening and speaking strategies and skills. Controlled short conversations and listening exercises will be used to help build confidence among the students. After working in controlled situations, students will be encouraged each lesson to practice speaking and do paired conversations beyond the controlled topics while developing and advancing their speaking and listening skills. Listening practices will focus on various topics, both general and academic.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term.

*In order to ensure the safety and health of both instructor and students, more emphasis on listening strategies will be placed in the classroom.  Time will be given to each student to work individually with the instructor in a safe environment throughout the term.
**Voice recognition software as well as on-line supplementary activities will be used by the students.
**EDMODO.COM will be used for supplementary materials and quizzes.

/Before After Study
Students will be expected to expand their vocabulary and focus on individual speaking exercises outside of the classroom.  Activities for vocabulary expansion, grammar review, as well as listening practice will be assigned each week through the publisher's online supplementary activities and review.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on weekly conversation tasks, homework, reflection sheets and vocabulary quizzes (50%), mid-term assessment (25%), and end-term assessment (25%).

On-line assignments will be given each week.  Students will be expected to complete these tasks for successful completion of the course.

/Before After Study
1 Orientation, Course Guidance, Introductions Syllabus, textbook, LMS system and Edmodo.com will all be introduced. Students will prepare vocabulary for Unit 1 on self-introduction.
2 Unit 1:You Different ways to introduce yourself as well as others will be examined. Students will prepare a short presentation on someone famous and their profession.
3 Too personal? Students will learn about what and what not to ask others from a cultural perspective. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 1 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 2: Home.
4 Unit 2: Home Living environments and placement prepositions will be the focus of this class. Students will prepare presentations on Japanese living environments through the ages.  
5 Architecture for living environments Students will examine different living environments around the world. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 2 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 3: Daily Life.
6 Unit 3: Daily Life Talking about daily life for various age groups in Japan will be the focus. Students will prepare presentations on various habits found in daily life in Japan.
7 Manners Students will learn the different levels of politeness used in daily life and business environments. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 3 and review the first three units for mid-term.
8 Unit 4:  Neighborhood  / Mid-term Assessment Students will learn how to discuss different types of neighborhoods found in Japan. Students will review vocabulary and grammar points focusing on the present perfect usage.
9 Community Action Students will learn about different volunteer groups and NPOs that work in neighborhoods. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 4 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 5: Work.
10 Unit 5:  Work The world of work and what job interviews will be the focus of this class. Students will review vocabulary used in discussing professions.  
11 Interviews Expressing opinions and agreeing and disagreeing with others in the work place will be the focus. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 5 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 6: Free Time.
12 Unit 6: Free Time Students will discuss common hobbies in Japan and among their generation. Students will review vocabulary and word usage for hobbies and sports.
13 Sports ... The Olympics Students will develop the ability to express likes and dislikes giving supporting details. Students will review the second half of the term's vocabulary and content for the final assessment.
14 Consolidation and Assessment Oral and written assessments will be conducted. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 6 and review strategies introduced in the term.
