授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This one-term, twice-a-week required class for first-year students develops a range of
English language skills (with an emphasis on oral communication) by applying practical
communication strategies to help build on those linguistic skills learned by students in high
school.
Overall Objectives
1. To give students maximum opportunities to communicate
2. To build student confidence in interpersonal communication
3. To begin to develop the basic study skills needed to successfully carry out their four
years of English study at this institution

This course focuses on improving students’ "listening" and "speaking," as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "oral receptive skills and productive skills," as stated in the CP.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This class will be conducted in English, and students are expected to speak in English with the instructor and with their classmates during the class time period.

The course primarily using a task-based method of presentation, combined with elements of instructor focused instruction. The course also contains elements intended to promote learner independence such as extended learning projects were students build upon information obtained in class via independent research.

Students will be required to bring their textbook, phone, paper and a pen.

This class will be delivered face to face on the university campus, with supplemental elements available online.

Feedback will be given to students via both verbal and written feedback, completed rubrics and score-sheets all of which are delivered via manaba.

Most of the activities will be conducted within the 100-minute class period.

Students will be required to preview classroom readings weekly (30 minutes).

Students will be required to complete online exercises for each chapter (12) weekly (1-2 hours).

Students will be required to complete homework after the completion of each class (1 hour).

評価方法
/Evaluation
Participation: 28% - (1 point per class period)
Participation requires a student to be in class and sincerely engage with the activities contained with the lesson

HW: 28% - (1 point per homework assignment)
Homework is always an extension of what was covered in class, and usually takes the form of reflecting or expanding on topics covered in class and are completed either in verbal or written form.

Midterm 10%
The midterm is a speaking project in which a student selects a topic of interest from those covered in class.

Online Learning 24% - (2 points per chapter)
Online learning contains listening, reading, grammar and critical thinking activities.

Assignments: 10%
Assignments occur at the end of each chapter and are a combination of writing and verbal work.

The course focuses on continuous learning, therefore  for a student to successfully navigate the course, they must attend to a wide variety of smaller tasks both inside and outside of the classroom.
