Overall Objectives 1. To help students understand the typical structure of a ‘good’ essay 2. To help students understand (genre-specific) patterns of essay organization 3. To help students plan essays 4. To help students use a variety of references and utilize Internet sources 5. To help students revise and edit their essays 6. To help students develop computer literacy skills 7. To help students become more familiar with referencing and creating a bibliography (MLA or APA styles) This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "writing" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written productive skills," as stated in the CP. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
In the second term, we will continue with the regular group work format but will focus on learning how to use evidence and sources to support opinions in an essay. Each week will involve practicing how to integrate quotations from books and internet sources as well as understand how to write a sources section at the end of an essay. Students will be expected to use basic sources in mid-term and final essays. Passages to use for sources will be provided for support and guided instruction. By the end of the course, students should be able to write an essay with properly formatted quotations in the essay and properly cited sources at the end of the essay. This citation style will be in what is called the APA format (American Psychological Association). We will contrast this with other styles such MLA (Modern Language Association). As with the first term, the class may remain on Zoom depending on the Covid situation but the class content and teaching methods will remain the same. | ||||||||||

Students should review all materials and exercises that are practiced during class time and try to use what they learned in their writing in future classes and assignments. Students are also encouraged to work with a writing journal to summarize and review weekly class-work and vocabulary. | ||||||||||
