授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
The aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the wonderful and intriguing cultural landscapes around the world. The term ‘cultural landscape’ refers to the interaction between humankind and its natural environment in a way that is culturally significant. Through this class you will be able to more fully understand what cultural landscape means and to develop a deeper interest in some of the magnificent wonders of the world. The reading material for this course will be provided by the instructor, mainly from academic articles and online travel magazines. This material will serve as the foundation for language analysis, topic understanding and class discussion. The reading load for this course will be around 10 pages per class |

Students considering this course should have a keen desire to research some world famous travel destinations and to consider how and why they were created. We will investigate places/things such as the pyramids of Egypt, the rice fields of Bali, Machu Picchu, Petra, Jordan, the Upper Middle Rheine River Valley, the salt mines of southern Poland, Roman baths, the Silk Road, Kyoto, Japan, and many others. Students will be asked to collaborate with others to research and present their findings on the cultural landscapes of their choice. The course will help students understand the world of tourism from a different perspective. |

事前:Students will preview, read, and synthesize the reading material; students will look up vocabulary items and will try to have a solid understanding before class time. 事後:Students will review the reading material for sentence level understanding and for the understanding of the central themes presented both in the material and the lecture. |

Grades are based on the following: in-class performance 50%, quizzes 25%, and a final discussion 25%. |
