授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
The aim of this reading course is to examine different threads and ideas prevalent in Japanese culture. Threads originating in historical times that are still present, if even in a hybrid form, will be the main focus. Some such ideas may include harmony, respect, mindfulness, concepts of religion as well as others.
Materials used will come from translations of original works as well as news articles, journals and academic writings.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be in English and active / “Learner-centered” in nature. Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, and active participation in discussions will be essential. Students will be required to keep a reading and vocabulary journal, write reflection papers and take quizzes intermittently throughout the semester.

*In order to maintain the safety of all students, discussions, group work and pair work will be restricted.  However, students will assume responsibility for directing the class each session.
**In general, this course will be conducted in the classroom.  In the event that on-line instruction is necessary due to the high rate of infection of COVID-19, on-time ZOOM will be used,  
**Presentations may be replaced by reports based on individual readings.

/Before After Study
Read material prior to class, complete worksheets for each reading, prepare for class leadership roles, and write a summary and opinion after each reading as well as complete the reading journal for each reading.

Essential words / vocabulary lists will be given for each reading.  Students will be expected to look up the words and understand their usage within each passage.

/Before After Study
1 Course introduction, Review of spring term A review of the themes discussed in the first term will be conducted. Students will read the article on Manga for the next class.  (90 minutes)
2 Reading 1:  Manga: Overview and Discussion The importance of MANGA in Japan and its impact on pop culture will be discussed. Students will complete worksheets about the reading. (90 minutes)
3 Reading 1: Discussion and Reflection Students will complete the article and discussions regarding it. Students will summarize the article and read the next article. (90 minutes)
4 Reading 2: Tea:  Overview and Discussion Tea and how it has shaped so many different aspects of Japanese culture will be discussed. Students will sample tea throughout the week and keep a journal. (90 minutes)
5 Reading 2: Discussion and Reflection Students will continue to read an article about Japanese tea and present their findings. Students will summarize the article read and read the article for next week's class. (90 minutes)
6 Reading 3: Shrines: Overview and Discussion Students will read an article about the buildings used in Shinto Shrines. Students will be encouraged to visit a shrine or temple during the week and record their findings.
7 Reading 3:  Discussion Students will discuss the article and share their experiences visiting religious places in the area. Students will read the article for the next class. (90 minutes)
8 Reading 4:  Hospitality and Hotels Students will examine the new trends in hospitality and hotels in Post-Covid Japan. Students will read the article for the next week. (90 minutes)
9 Reading 4: Discussion Students will discuss the article and consider the impact of AI / Robots in the hotel industry. Students will complete their worksheets and summaries for the next week. (90 minutes)
10 Reading 5: Cute Culture Students will discuss the article and focus on cute culture in Japan. Students will complete their worksheets for the reading.  (90 minutes)
11 Reading 5: Discussion An examination of the impact of cute culture and the Gender gap. Students will read the article for the next class.  (90 minutes)
12 Reading 6: Hot Springs and Bathing Culture Students will examine the hot springs culture and sauna boom in Japan. Students will write a summary complete the worksheet for Reading 6.  (90 minutes)
13 Reading 6:  Discussion / Group work Discussion about the hot spring culture and preparation for presentation will be the focus. Students will prepare group presentations for the final week. (120 minutes)
14 Group Presentations / Final Quiz Presentations will be given on a topic of each groups' choice based on the readings in this term. Students will review the topics covered in the term.
