授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course will focus on developing listening and speaking strategies and skills. Controlled short conversations and listening exercises will be used to help build confidence among the students. After working in controlled situations, students will be encouraged each lesson to practice speaking and do paired conversations beyond the controlled topics while developing and advancing their speaking and listening skills. Listening practices will focus on various topics, both general and academic. | ||||||||||

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term. *This class will be in general conducted in the classroom. ZOOM will be used ONLY if requested by the university to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Otherwise, students will be expected to be in the classroom each week. ZOOM classes will not be recorded due to the active nature of the class. **In order to ensure the safety and health of both instructor and students, more emphasis on listening strategies will be placed in the classroom. Time will be given to each student to work individually with the instructor in a safe environment throughout the term. ***Voice recognition software as well as on-line supplementary activities will be used by the student. ****EDMODO.COM will be used for supplementary materials and quizzes. |

Students will be expected to expand their vocabulary and focus on individual speaking exercises outside of the classroom. Activities for vocabulary expansion, grammar review, as well as listening practice will be assigned each week through the publisher's online supplementary activities and review. Additional listening practice will be assigned to supplement the text material. LMS and supplementary assignments should take 90 minutes each week. | ||||||||||

評価方法 /Evaluation |
Students will be assessed on weekly conversation tasks, homework, reflection sheets and vocabulary quizzes (50%), mid-term assessment (25%), and end-term assessment (25%). On-line assignments will be given each week. Students will be expected to complete these tasks for successful completion of the course. |

2 | Unit 1 Good to See You Again | Different ways to greet others will be introduced. Sentence stress is the focus. | Students will complete the LMS homework for Unit 1. |
3 | Too personal? | Students will learn about what and what not to ask others from a cultural perspective. | Students will review conversation speaking strategies and prepare vocabulary for Unit 2. |
4 | Unit 2: I'd like you to meet my brother |
Meeting someone for the first time is introduced. Weak forms is the focus. | Students will review vocabulary for discussing various types of families. |
5 | Family structures around the world | Students will examine different family structures around the world. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 2 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 3. |
6 | Unit 3: I've lost my rucksack | Listening skills will focus on linking sounds while discussing various objects in everyday life. | Students will review adjectives and adverbs used to describe objects. |
7 | Descriptions | Focus on adjectives and ways to describe people, places and things. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 3 and review the first three units for mid-term. |
8 | Unit 4: Everyone needs to stay together | Listening skills will focus on mixed sounds. / Oral assessment of all students will occur. | Students will prepare a map of their neighborhood. |
9 | Directions | Students will practice giving and listening to directions to various places on maps. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 4 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 5: |

11 | Unit 6:This is the Six O'clock news | Listening to news reports and giving opinions about news stories will be the focus. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 6. Students will prepare vocabulary for Unit 7. |
12 | Unit 7: How are we feeling today? | Intonation and rhythm in English will be the focus of this session. | Students review vocabulary and complete the online tasks for Unit 7. |
13 | Giving Advice | Students will develop the ability to give advice and respond to advice. | Students will review the second half of the term's vocabulary and content for the final assessment. |
14 | Consolidation and Assessment | Oral and written assessments will be conducted. | Students will review strategies introduced in the term. |
