Reading ability is a key factor in your future success as a university student: outstanding students need to read skillfully and read a lot. This course will provide a foundation for you to develop your academic reading skills in English. By the end of this course, you will be able to: - Read faster. - Utilize a range of strategies and skills that help you read. - Increase your vocabulary knowledge and help you to deal with unfamiliar words you encounter. - Read long form fiction and non-fiction texts in English. |

While reading is essentially a solitary activity, and there will be reading time in the class, there will also be a lot of opportunities to discuss in pairs and in groups. The focus of this class is on active learning, and students are expected to participate in the class in English as much as possible. | ||||||||||

Students will select 2 books that they will read outside of the class over the course of the semester. They will make a group with other students who are reading the same book. Each week they will have a discussion with their reading group, so they need to prepare for that, write a reading journal and prepare a presentation about the book that they selected. | ||||||||||
