授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary, and vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge 3. To develop comprehension skills for reading materials across different genres and topics. 4. To develop effective reading skills & deciphering academic texts (intensive reading, extensive reading, using visual/lexical & grammatical cues in academic texts) 5. To continue to develop reading strategies to read authentic texts/outside readers 6. To recognize how authors use in-text citations, direct quotations and referencing This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese," as stated in DP 7. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP. |

The method used for this course is active learning. Therefore, despite the fact that this course is a reading class that will focus on reading skills, participation in English is heavily emphasized and expected. There will be discussions, writing assignments, and presentations based on the reading texts that students will be expected to complete successfully. Fulfills DP Requirement #2 (Copy/Pasted English Translation from Dokkyo University Website: Regarding English proficiency, acquire comprehensive English skills such as vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking, and the ability to think logically and discuss English materials in English Active learning Discussion Heavy communicative style class teaching based on Readings from the Textbook (all in English) Google Classroom will be used Essays / Discussion / and Projects with an Oral Requirement – assignments as well as substantive reading and notetaking Some Group Work is required in Discussion and Projects |

Reading from the textbook/ notetaking / occasional project work and writing assignments Organize your notes after class. Look up any terms you do not understand so that you can explain them to others. In addition, re-read any works that come up in lectures or discussions (2 hours)(Copy/Pasted from 2023 Dokkyo Academic Course Guidelines) Be sure to read the specified portion of the textbook as preparation for each class, and be aware of the meaning of any specialized terminology (2 hours) |
