授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This one-term required class teaches second-year students how to read more effectively and then presents them with the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions successfully in group and class discussions while working with topical subjects. Overall Objectives 1. To teach students the skills involved in effective group discussion 2. To improve reading comprehension skills using topical reading material 3. To develop verbal reasoning skills together with the ability and opportunity to communicate their thoughts related to the topics and readings provided This course focuses on improving students’ "reading," "listening" and "speaking" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese," as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" and "oral receptive skills and productive skills," as stated in the CP. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
The class is primarily designed to be face-to-face. All handouts will be posted on Porta II website one week in advance of the lecture. However, students will be able to attend live via zoom (link posted on Porta II). Please note, however, I expect all students to attend in person for presentation day. Please attend the first class in person if possible. Students will be evaluated based on their performance on student led discussions. Students will be given detailed written and oral feedback on their performance after each discussion. There are three discussions per semester. |

事前?事後学修の内容 /Before After Study |
Before class, students are required to read all handouts and articles assigned (Posted on Porta II). Students are expected to look up all unknown words and fully understand the meaning of the text. (About 1 - 2 hours per class). After class, students are required to do all homework tasks set (write introductions, do research, have group meetings, etc.). Students are encouraged to meet outside of class with group members and practice for discussions. (About 1-2 hours per class). | ||||||||||
