授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary, and vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge 3. To develop comprehension skills for reading materials across different genres and topics. 4. To develop effective reading skills & deciphering academic texts (intensive reading, extensive reading, using visual/lexical & grammatical cues in academic texts) 5. To continue to develop reading strategies to read authentic texts/outside readers 6. To recognize how authors use in-text citations, direct quotations and referencing This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese," as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This course will be taught in English. Students are expected not only to attend but also to contribute to the classroom through exercises, activities, and discussions. Students will acquire skills to comprehend reading various texts and topics and expand their vocabulary and understanding of the context. Students will also acquire writing skills, exploring different styles of writing. They will receive feedback on their writing assignments. This course will be offered in person, otherwise indicated by the instructor. The class might switch to online, depending on the situation. Students may receive permission to attend remotely, depending on their individual circumstances. Each student is responsible for purchasing the textbook assigned in class. |
