/Course Objectives
Villains in Film: This course will focus on villains and antagonists in film.

The Joker and Batman, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter; heroes are made by the villains they overcome. Antagonists are key to understanding the central themes and conflicts of a film, and great villains are often the most compelling characters in a story.

We will review common villain tropes in literature and film and screen examples from a wide range of genres. Students will discuss and practice analyzing the themes and aesthetics of cinema villains with reference to the specific social and historic contexts that gave rise to some of the most memorable characters in movie history. Major assignments will include a short comparative essay and a final presentation.

This course focuses on improving students’ "listening" and "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English," as stated in DP, 2. Overall objectives are "to obtain a comprehensive English proficiency," as stated in the CP.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
Each week we will look at a different feature of film villains.  The first part of each class will include watching, reading about, and analyzing examples of cinema villains. Then we will review any questions and assignments. Finally, students will be given in-class exercises to complete. These will include student-driven small group discussions, problem solving, creative writing, and presentations. Feedback will be provided in class and in writing. Note that the teaching method, text material covered, and assessment style may change due to the demands of the ongoing health situation. Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class.

This class will meet in person. If this changes, the instructor will provide information via Manaba Course News. Contact the instructor promptly if you anticipate being absent or are unable to attend a class for any reason.
