授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives |
The goal in the Writing Skills III course is to develop students’ writing and critical thinking abilities in English, progressing from production of shorter to longer academic texts, and from writing on familiar topics to writing about more complex and academic ones. This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "writing" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written productive skills," as stated in the CP. Overall Objectives 1. To provide an overview of what constitutes a ‘good’ essay 2. To help students understand various patterns of essay organization 3. To help students plan essays 4. To help students revise and edit their essays 5. To help students use a variety of sources 6. To help students develop computer literacy skills 7. To introduce the basics of referencing and creating a bibliography (MLA or APA styles) |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course |
Each week will focus on an aspect of writing (such as basic paragraph construction) that will help develop basic writing skills with a view to writing short mid-term and final term essays. Classes are usually organised around group-work and students are expected to work together to discuss and solve tasks related to writing skills. Tasks will include learning how plan and construct topic sentences, understanding how to plan and brainstorm supporting sentences for paragraph construction, and an introduction to useful connecting words and phrases to make paragraphs more coherent. Students will be required to prepare short homework assignments to prepare for the following weeks’ classes. Depending on circumstances, classes may be conducted on Zoom and recorded and uploaded to manaba every week. The class content and teaching methods will be exactly the same as a regular campus based class. Students will be notified ahead of time if classes will be on Zoom or face-to-face. |

評価方法 ／Evaluation |
Mid-term essay (25%). Final term essay (25%). Active contribution to class activities and tasks related to the development of writing skills (25%). Timely completion of homework tasks (25%). When essays are evaluated, emphasis will be placed on how much students have integrated materials covered in class into their writing. | ||||||||||
