授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
The primary focus will be on developing strategies for increasing vocabulary, reading speed, and accuracy in reading comprehension. Prints of various lengths taken from books, magazines, and other print media will be used. The second focus will be on evaluating the text, looking at the type of message, its framing and context, and any cultural factors that we can see in either vocabulary or text development. Both long and short texts will be used, along with techniques for reading aloud, both full-sentence text or from PowerPoint item lists, as might be needed in business meetings. This course is a required course as stated in the CP, and fulfills requirements and goals for graduation (DP).

Lessons will be face-to-face, and conducted in English (although Japanese may be used when necessary). Prints will be distributed for each class, both in class for marking up (taking notes) and electronically. Students should have a separate 20-pocket A4 “pocket file” notebook for these prints and notes for each class. Students will read through the text, and then break into groups to discuss questions. Vocabulary tests will be given at the end of each class, and will contain at least 50%~100% student-selected vocabulary items, followed by a reflection essay. At the end of each class, reflection essays will be handed in to be graded on a points-added system, and returned the following class, for filing in the pocket file notebook. |

事前?事後学修の内容 /Before After Study |
Before class, students will be expected to look over the text at home and create a vocabulary list of 5~10 new words-to-know from that text. Students shall submit that list of vocabulary items at the beginning of each class, for meetings #2~#13. After class, students should read through the reflection notes that have been returned to them, and put their own comment on the paper, to prepare for review for the mid-term and final exams. |

The cumulative total will be 70% of the final grade, with 15% each on the mid-term and final tests, which will include both factual understanding of a text and a focus on the text evaluation, purpose, framing and context, as well as any cultural factors present.
