授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course will be a continuation of Comparative Societies and Cultures 1. Themes and topics found within the "Pillars of Society" will be introduced and discussed from a comparative view-point. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of comparative studies and how they can be utilized in their future studies. | ||||||||||

This course will be lecture-based. Students will be asked to actively participate in small group discussions within the classroom and share and exchange ideas with each other. Interactive media as well as various types of visual materials will be included to help engage students in the classroom. This course will be conducted in English and in the classroom only. |

Students will be given supplemental readings for the main themes introduced in the class. Vocabulary worksheets as well as review sheets to be completed during the lecture will be given to students prior to the lectures, and reflection sheets will be collected after each lecture. Students will be required to do on-line work outside of the classroom. |

1 | Course Overview / Aging Society | Course overview and then issues of aging societies around the world will be the focus. | Students will investigate aging and gender issues in their country of research. (90 min) |
2 | Gender Gap | Gender gap markers and issues surrounding the "Gender Gap" will be the focus of this lecture. | Students will investigate gender gap issues in their country of research. (90 minutes) |
3 | Discrimination Issues | A look at discrimination in the 1960s will be the focus of this lecture. | A 200-word summary of the class will be assigned after the lecture. (90 minutes) |
4 | Politics: The Power of the Vote | Elections and voting rights among youth in the world will be the topic for the lecture. | Students will read an article from the recommended reading list and summarize it. (90 minutes) |
5 | Religion - (1) | The importance of religion in primitive and traditional societies will be the focus of the class. | Vocabulary and summary worksheets will be distributed in class. (90 minutes) |
6 | Religion - (2) | Modern society and religion as well as religious discrimination will be discussed. | Students will prepare for group presentations on festivals around the world. (120 minutes) |
7 | Festivals and Celebrations / Mid-Term Assessment | Festivals and celebrations and their relation to societies and national identities will be examined. | Students will complete a food journal through the week to be used in the next lecture. (60 min) |
8 | Food and the Environment | Food and culture and environmental issues related to food consumption will be discussed. | Students will read an article from the recommended reading list. (90 min) |
9 | Pop Culture - (1) | Various types of trends in pop culture will be examined. | Students will summarize the group discussions about their readings they had in class. |
10 | Pop Culture - (2) | This will be a continuation of the "Pop Culture" lecture to examine trends in Japan. | Students will review the different aspects of Pop Culture and its global importance. (60 min) |
11 | Changes in Society through IT and AI | Different cultural trends in the use of IT will be presented. | Students will read and summarize an article about IT and society. (90 minutes) |
12 | Environmental Issues (1) | Issues about population and the environment will be presented in class. | Students will examine SDGs and the progress that their country of choice has made on them. (90 min) |
13 | Sports | Sports from a societal and cultural point of view will be introduced. | Students will review lectures and complete term summary worksheet. (90 min) |
14 | Comparative Societies and Cultures Revisited | Review of the main theories and methods and their use through the main themes introduced in class. | Review of the material presented throughout the course. |
