授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This class is an introductory course to Japanese history and culture, focusing on the years through to the Meiji Restoration of 1868: prehistoric and ancient Japan (to 538), classical Japan (538-1185), medieval Japan (1185-1600), Edo period (1660-1868). Students will be asked to read various scholarly and general writings, watch related documentaries, listen to lectures, and discuss them in class. The course will be conducted largely in English, so no advanced knowledge of Japanese is necessary. Students will make an independent trip to the Edo Tokyo Museum near Ryogoku Station, instead of class one week. They will also write a report on their impressions of their visit.

評価方法
/Evaluation
There will be two one-page essays assigned during the course each semester, probably around week 5 and week 8, with a final report (four to five pages) assigned at the end. The essays and final report will constitute about two-thirds of the grade. The rest will be based on regular and active participation in class each week, along with other factors to be explained later.

Standard of performance evaluation: AA=deep understanding and a high level of originality and independence, A=average level of understanding with some originality and independence, B=below-average level of understanding  and little originality and independence, C=minimal understanding, originality and independence

Four or more absences will likely disqualify students from getting credit.
4回以上の欠席は単位取得を困難にする。
