授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
The goal in the Writing Skills IV course is to develop students’ writing and critical thinking abilities in English, progressing from production of shorter to longer academic texts, and from writing on familiar topics to writing about more complex and academic ones. Students should be encouraged to use and integrate authentic text to reflect, react, write, and revise.

Overall Objectives
1. To help students understand the typical structure of a ‘good’ essay
2. To help students understand (genre-specific) patterns of essay organization
3. To help students plan essays
4. To help students use a variety of references and utilize Internet sources
5. To help students revise and edit their essays
6. To help students develop computer literacy skills
7. To help students become more familiar with referencing and creating a bibliography (MLA or APA styles)

This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "writing" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written productive skills," as stated in the CP.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
We will spend approximately two weeks per chapter, and in this semester we cover Chapters 8-14. In the first week of each chapter we will analyze the sample reading for the target writing objectives. Students will learn how to incorporate those examples into their own writing. Attention will also be given to vocabulary building.  In the second week of each chapter, students will be given more exercises to develop their skills with the chapter's target.

Each week students will spend some time on fluency exercises designed to increase their English writing speed. Students will also work in groups to solve problems and to brainstorm.
事前?事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Before each class, students should look up unknown vocabulary and expressions in the textbook (60 minutes).

After each class, complete any exercise that was not covered in class (30 minutes). Students will be assigned weekly homework, which will include fluency writing practice, making brainstorming and outline notes, completing first drafts of essays, revising essays, and final drafts (1-3 hours).
