授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
The ability to write clear English and to support your ideas with information from different sources is an important skill in the workplace as well as at university. During this course we will cover a number of topics that are important now and in the future, and students are encouraged to discuss these topics and come up with their own ideas. This writing course will build on the writing skills studied in Writing Skills I and II to: 1. Understand what a 'good' essay is and to be able to use different patterns of essay organization. 2. Plan, revise and edit their essays, and develop computer literacy skills. 3. Use a variety of sources and understand how to cite and reference them (APA style). |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This class is student-based and students are expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, answer questions and solve problems. In this semester we will look at model essays which describe, explain, compare and offer solutions to current problems. We will also discuss a variety of topics, including the environment and social issues. I will review the previous class before we begin each class. Students will then write a first draft of each assigned essay, revise it based on comments from the teacher and others in the class and make a final draft. The final drafts are submitted as a portfolio of completed assignments at the end of the semester. Writing essays is challenging and each student has different problems so I encourage you to share your problems with me at the end of the class or by email. |

Students must also plan and research their essays, work on their first drafts of essays, revise them according to comments by the instructor and students in the class and submit as final drafts. Students will use Manaba to download tasks for in-class work and to upload essay assignments and make-ups. |
