授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives	The goal in the Writing Skills III course is to develop students’ writing and critical thinking abilities in English, progressing from production of shorter to longer academic texts, and from writing on familiar topics to writing about more complex and academic ones. This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "writing" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written productive skills," as stated in the CP. Overall Objectives 1. To provide an overview of what constitutes a ‘good’ essay 2. To help students understand various patterns of essay organization 3. To help students plan essays 4. To help students revise and edit their essays 5. To help students use a variety of sources 6. To help students develop computer literacy skills 7. To introduce the basics of referencing and creating a bibliography (MLA or APA styles) 8. This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "writing" skills.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Each week will focus on an aspect of writing (such as basic paragraph construction) that will help develop basic writing skills with a view to writing short mid-term and final term essays. Classes are usually organized around group-work and students are expected to work together to discuss and solve tasks related to writing skills. Tasks will include learning how plan and construct topic sentences, understanding how to plan and brainstorm supporting sentences for paragraph construction, and an introduction to useful connecting words and phrases to make paragraphs more coherent. Students will be required to prepare short homework assignments to prepare for the following weeks’ classes.
事前?事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students should spend at least one to two hours reviewing the materials covered in class to consolidate the information presented. This includes spending adequate time preparing all homework assignments which should be submitted the day before the class by mail attachment. Sharing the answers to homework assignments will form part of group-work activities at the beginning of class. Model answers provided after discussion activities should also be used for reference and review outside of class.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Mid-term essay (25%). Final term essay (25%). Active contribution to class activities and tasks related to the development of writing skills (25%). Timely completion of homework tasks (25%). When essays are evaluated, emphasis will be placed on how much students have integrated materials covered in class into their writing.

1	Class overview and base writing assignment.	Objectives of the course and self introduction.	Review key terms and expressions related to essay writing in English covered in class.
2	Understanding how to write for an audience.	Finding missing information in a self- introduction	Become acquainted with the idea that a reader shouldn't need to ask questions about an essay.
3	Introduction to planning strategies for writing.	Brainstorming/mind-mapping and quick writing	Review materials related to brainstorming from links and handouts provided.
4	The paragraph: Topic & supporting sentences.	Looking at the function of the topic sentence	Become familiar with terms such as the 'Topic Sentence' and controlling ideas.
5	Understanding the Thesis Statement.	How the Thesis Statement functions in an introduction and connects to paragraphs.	Review what a 'Thesis Statement' is and how it functions in an essay.
6	Planning for mid-term essay assignment.	Group discussion and planning ideas for mid-term assignment.	Review and improve on brainstorming activities for essays discussed in group work.
7	Mid-term assignment submission and peer review.	Guided peer review and reading each other's work.	Prepare instructions on how to undertake peer review work from the handouts provided.
8	Essay feedback and individual advice.	Return of individual mid-term assignments with individual comments and support.	Review individual comments for essays and rewrite a final draft essay.
9	The Thesis Statement and paragraph order.	How the Thesis Statement links to the topic sentences of paragraphs.	Review the function of a Thesis Statement and understand how it connects essay paragraphs.
10	Transition phrases: Developing continuity.	Practicing how transition phrases work to connect sentences and paragraphs.	Familiarize yourself with connecting words and phrases that are similar to your own Japanese.
11	Final essay topics: Planning and discussion.	Choosing topics for final essay submission and planning/mind-mapping in groups.	Prepare ideas for a first draft of a final term essay for brainstorming in groups.
12	Final essay draft submission and peer review.	Peer review of a first draft of the final essay and essay submission.	Review and prepare peer review checklists for reading bath other's work.
13	Draft essay feedback.	Return of individual draft submission with comments and advice.	Review individual essay feedback and start to rewrite the final version of your essay.
14	Final version submission.	Submission of rewritten draft into a final version with peer review.	Prepare your essay for a final peer review and essay submission.
