授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
The aim of this course is to develop academic reading and writing skills in an integrated way. Students will write essays and reading practice will help them to develop their knowledge and vocabulary of the topics they will write about. Students will study 4 topic areas from different academic fields, and write essays about each of them. In the Autumn semester, the course will cover different essay types such as cause / effect or compare / contrast and using citations & references. This course focuses on improving students’ "reading" and "writing" skills and their "competence to think critically in English," as stated in DP, 2. Overall objectives are "to obtain a comprehensive English proficiency," as stated in the CP. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
The class will meet twice a week, and one class will focus on reading, the other writing. The course will be taught in a communicative way, with a focus on pair and groupwork activities. Students will also give and receive feedback from their peers on their essays. The class will be conducted in English and students are expected to participate in the classes in English. |

Students need to prepare for vocabulary tests using an app called Quizlet. Students will prepare for writing 4 timed essays during class. They need to spend time reading and researching the topic to make an essay plan before the class. Students choose two of their timed essays to submit a final draft, which needs to be typed and submitted after class. Students can expect to spend 1 -2 hours a week studying outside of the class. |
