授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
Overall Objectives- Reading 1. Continued vocabulary building 2. Recognizing more complex grammatical and sentence structures 3. Making inferences from texts to increase global comprehension 4. Recognizing organizational patterns and outlining texts (compare/contrast, cause/effect and expository) 5. Introducing literary elements through narrative texts such as short stories 6. Recognizing parenthetical citations, signaling verbs and referencing in academic texts Overall Objectives- Writing 1. To consolidate and build upon the understanding of essay structural elements developed in RWS I. 2. To practice writing other essay types such as compare/contrast, cause/effect, expository or narrative. 3. To consolidate the understanding of academic stylistic and genre features developed in RWS I while broadening knowledge of the range of expressions used in academic contexts. 4. To integrate information from primary and secondary sources into essays, with correct use of citations and references following APA guidelines and understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism. 5. To provide guidance on the essay writing process, from planning, through to drafting and revising, with opportunities to give and receive feedback. 6. To provide opportunities to practice timed-essay writing that as practice for tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students and takes place twice a week and is complementary to the spring RWS I course. The course will continue to build on the reading and writing skills developed in the spring, particularly consolidating the basics of essay structure, while introducing students to a broader range of text types in both reading and writing, such as: compare/contrast, cause/effect, expository and narrative texts. RWS II should also cover citations and referencing in depth, following APA guidelines. |

Students will be expected to do a portion of the reading for the class outside of the classroom as well as certain aspects of the writing process, for example, writing, researching, and finalizing/ revising their work as an example. | ||||||||||
