授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This twice-a-week required class for first-year students concentrates on developing both reading and writing skills and builds on the skills learned in Reading and Writing Skills I.

Writing Objectives
1. To develop proficiency using the 5-paragraph essay.
2. To develop basic academic research skills
3. To improve writing fluency
4. To analyze, critique revise writing drafts


Reading Objectives
1. Improve general reading comprehension
2. Develop critical reading skills
3. Improve reading fluency
4. Develop greater analytical skills for understanding plot, character and writing style  
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
The writing portion of the class will consist of 3 parts: lecture, individual writing and peer review. The lecture will cover writing and assignment goals. The individual writing will include both in class and out of class writing assignments. The peer review will include reading and critiquing another student's writing.  

The reading portion of the class will largely consist of 3 parts: individual reading of assigned text, small group discussion of the assigned text, and short quizzes about the assigned text.  

Students are strongly encouraged to bring a wi-fi capable laptop or writing tablet to each class. Students will be expected to submit writing assignments via manaba before each class deadline.

Outside class preparation time will likely be one to two hours a week concerning assigned reading and  writing assignments.
