授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course will focus on developing communication skills, with an emphasis on listening and speaking strategies and skills. Controlled short conversations and listening exercises will be used to help build confidence among the students. After working in controlled situations, students will be encouraged each lesson to practice speaking and do paired conversations beyond the controlled topics while developing and advancing their speaking and listening skills. Listening practices will focus on various topics, both general and academic. This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies. |

This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term. Due to the active nature of this class, on-line participation or "make-up" papers will not be accepted. *Voice recognition software as well as on-line supplementary activities will be used by the student. |

Students will be expected to expand their vocabulary and focus on individual speaking exercises outside of the classroom. Students will also be expected to listen to some form of English each day for 5 to 10 minutes outside of class. LMS and supplementary assignments should take 90 minutes each week. | ||||||||||

評価方法 /Evaluation |
Students will be assessed on weekly conversation tasks, homework, reflection sheets and vocabulary quizzes (50%), mid-term assessment (25%), and end-term assessment (25%). On-line assignments will be given each week. Students will be expected to complete these tasks for successful completion of the course. Students will receive weekly feedback on their work through the reflection sheets. |

Living environments and placement prepositions will be the focus of this class. | Students will prepare presentations on various living environments around the world. |
5 | Architecture for living environments | Students will examine different living environments and sustainable lifestyles. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 2 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 3. |
6 | Unit 3: Daily life | Talking about daily life activities for different age groups in Japan will be the focus. | Students will prepare presentations on various lifestyles in Japan. |
7 | Manners | Students will learn the different levels of politeness used in daily life and business environments. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 3 and review the first three units. |
8 | Mid-term oral and written assessment | Paired oral assessment and written assessment will be conducted. | Students will prepare vocabulary and a a map of their neighborhood. |
9 | Unit 4: Neighborhood | Students will discuss different types of neighborhoods found in Japan. | Students will review vocabulary and grammar points focusing on the present perfect usage. |
10 | Community Action | Students will learn about different volunteer groups and NPOS that work in neighborhoods. | Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 4 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 5: Work. |
11 | Unit 5: Work | The world of work and job interviews will be the focus of the class. | Students will review vocabulary used in discussing professions and complete online tasks for Unit 5. |
12 | Unit 6: Free Time | Students will discuss common hobbies in Japan and among the youth generation around the world. | Students will review vocabulary introduced in the unit and complete online tasks for Unit 6. |
