授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This course will focus on continuing to develop the writing skills studied in the spring semester by examining various purposes of writing. Students will write simple paragraphs and develop their writing in to short essays during the course. Students will also learn how to write a short research paper, complete with documentation and reference lists. Common mistakes and how to avoid them will be also introduced to the students. Self-help techniques as well as peer checking and reviewing will also be incorporated in this course.

This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be learner-centered with active learning as the main focus of this class. In principle, this class will be conducted in the classroom with students completing writing tasks each week during the class period.

/Before After Study
Students will be expected to  keep an English journal throughout the course. Students will also be expected to use the university's library to complete research tasks for their final report.   Journal writing should be approximately 60 to 90 minutes of writing outside of class each week.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on  journal writing (30%), weekly writing assignments (50%),  and short research paper (20%).

All written work will be returned to the students within 2 weeks of submission.  Students will be able to re-write any of the weekly written work, excluding the final research paper and writing assignment, if the writing has not met the passing benchmarks established for each assignment.

/Before After Study
1 Course Introduction, Reporting Students will interview partners and write about summer holidays. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class. (90 minutes)
2 Processes, Time Students will review adverbs and then write a short essay about a process. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class. (90 minutes)
3 Descriptions, Space Students will review prepositions of placement and write description paragraphs about a place. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class. (90 minutes)
4 Explanation paragraphs Students will explain something about Japan. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class.  (90 minutes)
5 Short answers Students will practice techniques for taking examinations in English. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class.  (90 minutes)
6 Essay questions Students will practice techniques for answering essay questions in English. Students will write 4 pages in their journal for the next class.  (90 minutes)
7 Resumes and Cover Letters Students will learn how to make a resume and cover letter in English. Students will practice typing to complete their resume and cover letter. (90 minutes)
8 Research Paper: Resources and Citations Students will learn how to make citations and document research papers in English. Students will look up various kinds of resources for a research paper. (90 minutes)
9 Research Paper: Outlines and Introductions Students will write an outline and an introduction for their paper. Students will work on their research paper. (90 minutes)
10 Research Paper: Quoting and summarizing Students will learn the difference between quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing.   Students will continue to work on their research paper.  (90 minutes)
11 Research Paper:  Documentation - Endnotes Students will learn the rules for documentation sources within their paper. Students will continue to work on their research paper.  (90 minutes) Journals will be collected.
12 Research Paper: Body and Conclusion The body of a research paper as well as the conclusion will be examined in class. Students will continue to work on their research paper.  (90 minutes)
13 Research Paper:  Consolidation and Final Draft Students will review the citations and reference sections of their papers and do peer editing. Students will complete their research paper for submission in the last class.  (120 minutes)
14 Final Assessment: Summary and Opinion writing Students will read an article, summarize it and then write their opinion about the topic. Students should review the various skills acquired in the course.
