授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course is required for all incoming first year students. It shares a common syllabus. The course introduces students to the dynamics of discussion and interaction within the English language classroom. Class size is limited to a maximum of 12 students. Students, together with the instructor, are seated in a circle in order to create an environment that facilitates meaningful and authentic communication. The primary goals for this course are to help students develop language and discussion skills, advance confidence in communicative English, and learn how to create and maintain a small group discussion. Additional course goals include learning about topics brought forth by students each week, and gaining a better perspective on one’s own English acquisition--for self-motivation. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
Weekly reoccurring tasks: Oracy tasks: Each class students in pairs read out loud to each other from a prescribed test for fluency and lexical understanding. Special warm-up task: Each class students present their individual warm-up topic to the whole group. Ideally, they present the topic without the benefit of a written text. Round Table Discussion: This task serves as the foundation of the class. Students plan and research a topic in advance of class each week. They then discuss it with the guidance of the instructor. Class reflection: Time is allowed for students together to reflect on their language performance each class. Students reflect on their individual classroom and collective performance. The aim is to promote linguistic awareness and to advance classroom dynamics. This is conducted in Japanese in order facilitate fair and easy communication. Planning: Students plan the next Roundtable Discussion. They decide the topic and discussion leader. |

Students need to 1) prepare their warm-up topic, 2) conduct research for the RT Discussion, and 3) practice reading for oracy, and they need to reflect on the material that was covered in the previous class. |

評価方法 /Evaluation |
Evaluation is based on preparedness, classroom participation, completion of all tasks, and self-evaluation. Each instructor will establish and clarify their own grading policy in line with the above at the start of the semester. Students are encourage to consult with the instructor if they have any questions. |
