授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
The aim of this reading course is to examine different threads and ideas prevalent in Japanese culture. Threads originating in historical times that are still present, if even in a hybrid form, will be the main focus. Some such ideas may include harmony, respect, mindfulness, concepts of religion as well as others.
Materials used will come from translations of original works as well as news articles, journals and academic writings.

This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be in English and active / “Learner-centered” in nature. Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, and active participation in discussions will be essential. Students will be required to write summaries of each reading as well as weekly reflection papers and take quizzes intermittently throughout the semester.

*Presentations may be replaced by reports based on individual readings.

/Before After Study
Read material prior to class, complete worksheets for each reading, prepare for class leadership roles, and write a summary and opinion after each reading.
*Time in class will be used for discussion, not for translation or reading.  SO students must be prepared for class.
Essential words / vocabulary lists will be given for each reading.  Students will be expected to look up the words and understand their usage within each passage.

/Evaluation
Grades are based on the following: in-class participation,  reflection papers, and worksheets, 60%; mid-term and final presentations -- or reports, 40%.  

Students will receive weekly feedback on their progress in class through the reflection sheets.

1 Course introduction Students will discuss themes / threads found in Japanese culture. Article for the next week will be read outside of class.  (90 minutes)
2 Reading 1: Overview and Discussion Students will examine Japanese culture from an cultural anthropologist's point of view. Students will complete worksheets and journal entries for review of article read. (90 minutes)
3 Reading 1: Discussion and Reflection Students will continue to read an article about Japanese traditional culture. Article for the next week will be read outside of class. (90 minutes)
4 Reading 2: Overview and Discussion Students will examine Japanese culture and how it is presented to the West. Students will complete worksheets and journal entries for review of article read. (90 minutes)
5 Reading 2: Discussion Based on the readings, aspects of Japanese culture will be discussed. Article for the next week will be read outside of class. (90 minutes)
6 Reading 3: Overview and Discussion Students will examine another aspect of Japanese culture and how it is presented to the West. Students will complete worksheets and journal entries for review of article read.  (90 minutes)
7 Reading 3:  Discussion and Reflection: Based on the readings, Japanese culture will be discussed.  Presentation groups will be assigned. Preparation for group presentation and review for mid-term quiz.  (120 minutes)
8 Mid-term group presentations / quiz Group presentations over student-chosen themes will be given.  Mid-term quiz over readings. Article for the next week will be read outside of class. (90 minutes)
9 Reading 4: Overview and Discussion Students will read an article about a contemporary issue in Japanese society. Students will complete worksheets and journal entries for review of article read. (90 minutes)
10 Reading 4: Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss contemporary issues in Japanese society based on the article read. Article for the next week will be read outside of class. (90 minutes)
11 Reading 5: Overview and Discussion Diversity and Inclusivity will be themes considered in this reading. Students will complete worksheets and journal entries for review of article read. (90 minutes)
12 Reading 5: Overview and Discussion Students will discuss the article and issues in their community based on the article. Article for the next week will be read outside of class. (90 minutes)
13 Reading 6: Discussion and Reflection Students will read about the various efforts to share Japanese culture with foreign guests. Students will prepare for the final presentation and review material for final quiz. (120 minutes)
14 Final Presentations/Final Quiz over readings Presentations on different aspects of the sharing of Japanese culture with guests. Students will review the vocabulary and ideas presented in the first term. (90 minutes)
