授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
The aim of this reading course is to examine different threads and ideas prevalent in Japanese culture. Threads originating in historical times that are still present, if even in a hybrid form, will be the main focus. Some such ideas may include harmony, respect, mindfulness, concepts of religion as well as others.
Materials used will come from translations of original works as well as news articles, journals and academic writings.

This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be in English and active / “Learner-centered” in nature. Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, and active participation in discussions will be essential. Students will be required to write summaries of each reading as well as weekly reflection papers and take quizzes intermittently throughout the semester.

/Before After Study
Read material prior to class, complete worksheets for each reading, prepare for class leadership roles, and write a summary and opinion after each reading as well as complete the reading journal for each reading.
*Class time will be for discussion, not for translation or reading. SO students must read the material prior to each class.
Essential words / vocabulary lists will be given for each reading.  Students will be expected to look up the words and understand their usage within each passage.

Grades are based on the following: in-class participation, and reflection papers, 50%, mid-term and final presentations or reports and quizzes, 50%.

Students will receive weekly feedback on their progress through the reflection sheets.

1 Course introduction, Review of spring term A review of the themes discussed in the first term will be conducted. Students will read the article on Japanese cultural trends for the next class.  (90 minutes)
2 Reading 7:  Overview and Discussion Students will discuss the article and answer questions. Students will complete worksheets about the reading. (90 minutes)
3 Reading 7: Discussion and Reflection Students will complete the article and discussions regarding it. Students will summarize the article and read the next article. (90 minutes)
4 Reading 8: Overview and Discussion Students will read an article about Japanese society. Students will visit their local community and  keep a record of their observations. (90 minutes)
5 Reading 8: Discussion and Reflection Students will continue to read the article about Japanese society and present their findings. Students will summarize the article read and read the article for next week's class. (90 minutes)
6 Reading 9: Overview and Discussion Students will read an article community activities in Japan. Students will be encouraged to visit community centers during the week.
7 Reading 9:  Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss the article and share their experiences visiting places in the area. Students will read the article for the next class. (90 minutes)
8 Reading 10:  Overview and Discussion Students will examine the new trends in Japanese society. Students will read the article for the next week. (90 minutes)
9 Reading 10: Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss the article and consider the trends from various viewpoints. Students will complete their worksheets and summaries for the next week. (90 minutes)
10 Reading 11: Overview and Discussion Students will discuss the article and focus on cultural threads in Japan. Students will complete their worksheets for the reading.  (90 minutes)
11 Reading 11: Discussion and Reflection An examination of the cultural threads will be discussed in this class. Students will read the article for the next class.  (90 minutes)
12 Reading 12: Overview and Discussion Students will examine the final topic chosen for this term. Students will write a summary complete the worksheet for Reading 12.  (90 minutes)
13 Reading 12:  Discussion / Group work Discussion about the topic and group work for a final presentation will be done.   Students will prepare group presentations for the final week. (120 minutes)
14 Group Presentations / Final Quiz Presentations will be given on a topic of each groups' choice based on the readings in this term. Students will review the topics covered in the term.
