授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This course will be a continuation of Introduction to Culture and Life Around the World I. It will provide students an opportunity to examine myths, fables and fairytales from around the world with a focus on the universal themes and ideas found within these stories.  Through these stories, students will explore various societies and cultures from which the stories have come.  Students will also explore different ethical ideas and questions that emerge through the human experience.

*This is a required course for graduation for students entering the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies from AY 2024 as stated in the curriculum policy of the department.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be lecture-based in principle.  Students will work in groups after each thematical lecture and read stories from various societies and cultures based on the themes presented in the lecture.  Then through group discussions and presentations, students will share the stories they have read with others so that all the participants can have a overall view of different culturally based ideas found in universal themes and experiences.

This class will be conducted in English, and students will develop their English ability (in the four areas) and critical thinking skills throughout this course.

/Before After Study
Students will be required to read literature provided by the instructor on each of the given themes presented in class.  Investigation into various societies and cultures  presented through the readings will also be necessary so that students can better understand the historical and cultural background and significance of the stories presented in class.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Class participation through group discussions and presentations and weekly reflection sheets, 60%; written assessments (quizzes), 40%.  

Weekly feedback will be provided to students through the reflection sheets, and evaluations on written work and presentations will be provided within 2 weeks after the assessment.

/Before After Study
1 Introduction of Course / Brief overview of topics Overview of syllabus, evaluation procedures, class and group format, literature to be read. Vocabulary preparation and questions for consideration of pride and hubris tales. (60 minutes)
2 Lecture on Pride and Hubris Pride and hubris are universal themes in all societies and cultures. This topic will be examined. Students will read stories with the theme of Pride and Hubris. (60 minutes)
3 Reading Discussion on Pride and Hubris Tales Students will discuss in groups the stories read. Students will complete worksheets and prepare materials for group discussions.  (60 minutes)
4 Group Exchange Students will get in to new groups and present their stories to others. Vocabulary preparation for the topic of "Quality of Life". (60 minutes)
5 Lecture on the Concept of "Quality of Life" A lecture on "Quality of Life" as a topic found in stories of old and life in today's  world.   Students will read stories regarding "QOL" ideas from around the world.  (60 minutes)
6 Reading Discussion on "QOL" stories Students will discuss in groups the stories read. Preparation for presentations to others on the stories read and the cultures they are from. 60 min.
7 Group Exchange Students will get in to new groups and present the stories read to other students. Vocabulary preparation for the societal / environment problems lecture. (60 minutes)
8 Lecture on Modern Problems and Myths Various modern-day problems and their universality will be presented. Students will read stories that focus on societal problems through the ages.  (60 minutes)
9 Reading Discussion on Modern Problems and Myths Students will discuss various problems societies and cultures confront based on stories read. Students will prepare for group discussion and information exchange session. (60 minutes)
10 Group Exchange Students will get in to new groups and present the stories read to other students. Students will review vocabulary for Fate / End of Life / End of World lecture.  (60 minutes)
11 Lecture on the ideas of "The End" The lecture focuses on apocalyptic tale or tales about fate and death. Students will read stories that focus on the theme of "The End".  (60 minutes)
12 Reading Discussion on "The End" Students will discuss the stories read among the various groups, examining "The End". Students will prepare for group exchange discussion session. (60 minutes)
13 Group Exchange Students will exchange information regarding the theme of "The End". Preparation for Class presentations on "The End".  (90 minutes)
14 Course Consolidation / Group Presentations After a short review of the topics presented, students will give presentations. Consolidation and review of material of 2nd semester.  (60 minutes)
