/Course Objectives
This course will explore the role of idioms in language use. Idioms (e.g., be at a crossroads, the tip of the iceberg, safe and sound) are multi-word expressions that make up part of the "formulaic language" that is important for learners to acquire in order to become proficient users of English. We will focus on key aspects of English idioms, including the definition of "idiom," specific types of idioms, fixedness vs. variability, and the use of idioms in journalism and advertising. We will also discuss how the use of idioms in daily life reflects general principles of language use.
The main aims of this course are for students to:
1) gain an understanding of what past research says about key aspects of idioms;
2) build their vocabulary (both receptive and productive);
3) develop their ability to participate actively in group discussions and do oral presentations about specialized topics, using English.

事前?事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
1) Before class (2 hours): Students must read a passage from the textbook and prepare a mini-report (summary/comment) or worksheet every week. This preparation will help you to participate actively in group discussion and follow lectures.
2) After class (2 hours): Students must complete vocabulary exercises from the textbook (1 page a week) and review the slides and materials used in class. You will also need to take ample time to prepare oral presentations and the Final Paper.
