/Course Objectives
□Content
The purpose of this course is to allow the students to engage in and explore a variety of current issues in society

□Reading & Discussion
?read and evaluate texts in social sciences and humanities
?express one’s opinions about the course topic in a discussion constructively

□Writing & Presentations
?write a research paper on the course topic with appropriate citation (600-900 words + bibliography)
?make a visually aided presentation of the paper

Class is taught and participated in English.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This is a dynamic class, and the students are expected to communicate in English at all times. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion through pair and group work. All teaching handouts will be available on manaba. Students, therefore, must be sure to have printed out all the relevant handouts beforehand and remember to bring them to each class. Please note that the syllabus is subject to adjustments and change depending on students' level, interests and progress made.

2 Japanese work ethics. Introduction to the topic. Introduction to the concepts.
3 Japanese work practices. How do companies organize their workers.
4 Japanese company culture. In depth analysis of how Japanese companies run and treat their workers.
5 What makes a good employee? Discussion on the characteristics of a good employee.
6 How to write a research paper. Investigation as to the elements of what makes a first class research paper.
7 Tourism. – Introduction to the topic. Introduction to the main concept of the topic.
8 Airplanes and pollution. Learn about the impact airplanes make on the environment.
9 Alternative staying option. Exploring the alternative accommodation options.
10 Eco-tourism. Introducing the concept of eco-tourism.
11 Why learn English? Introduction to the topic. The first look at the main concept of the issue.
12 English as the world language? Is English the most important language?
13 English and citizenship. Learn about the relationship between the language and citizenship.
14 Oral presentation. Students give presentation on their final research papers.
