授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
Students will follow the history of the Japanese classic poetry starting from Kojiki and Manyoshu, while gaining insights about the Japanese culture, language, emotional and psychological characteristics, religion, and the social dynamics, including: ● Formation of National Identity under the Influence of Chinese Civilization ● Development of the Japanese writing system (Hiragana, Katakana) ● Womens’ position in Heian era and their contribution to its literature ● Poetic sensitivity of Monono Aware and Okashi ● Emergence of Samurai and Sense of Impermanence (無常) ● Practice of harmony and collaboration in the Japanese art ● Discovery of 'Karumi (軽み)' through the development of Haiku |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This course is taught entirely in ENGLISH! The class activities will include reading poem texts in the original Japanese along with the English translation, discussion, and workshops. A brief "reaction paper" should be written after each class. At the end of the semester, a longer "report" should be written summarizing the essential elements of this course. |
