授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. This course aims to
provide second-year students with reading opportunities to further develop the academic
and narrative reading skills that they were introduced in their first year reading course
sequence. Students will be introduced to a variety of both academic and narrative texts while
being provided diverse learning opportunities that allow them to increase their reading
skills across varied genres of text.

Overall Objectives

1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary and
vocabulary building skills in general.
2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge and recognize cohesive devices.
3. To develop a better understanding of various styles and purposes of reading material.
4. To develop effective reading skills (intensive reading, extensive reading, etc.). 5. To
introduce students to authentic texts/outside readers.

This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence, to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese" as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
One of the best ways to improve reading skills is to read a lot so students will be provided with many opportunities to improve their reading abilities in class. Students will develop their reading skills in class and they will also do outside reading on their own to promote more autonomous learning. Some of the main academic reading skills developed on the course will include summarizing texts, paraphrasing ideas, analyzing texts, connecting texts to other contexts, vocabulary/grammar developments, researching topics, etc.

The course will focus on understanding short stories as well as connecting those stories to other readings (academic readings) and issues relevant to modern Japan.
事前?事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will analyze a short story for each unit. Students will also complete outside readings related to the topic. For homework, students will keep a academic reading journal and complete weekly journal tasks to build their readings skills and abilities. Students will spend about 30-40 minutes doing their homework.

Students will use short stories from the textbook Discovering Fiction 1 and other extra reading materials. All of the materials will be provided by the teacher.
