授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives	This thematic reading course aims to read various texts and critically examine the region of the American South, considering its historical, geographical, social, and cultural aspects. The American South is a region unfamiliar to those from outside of the region. However, it is a region that cannot be ignored when thinking about the social and political trajectory of the country. The topics we will cover in this class include immigration, politics, identities, food, religion, music, and arts. Through reading and discussions, students will be able to define and redefine the U.S. history from the South as we explore the diversities that the region embraces.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This class will use English as our main language. Students are expected to read about 15 to 20 pages of text every week and come to class with their completed homework assignments. During class, students will take a comprehension and vocabulary quiz, followed by class discussions. Students will receive feedback on their homework assignments, quizzes, and discussions.
事前?事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Please refer to manaba for course materials and instructions. Students should come to class prepared to discuss and critically analyze the text in groups. The assignments are based on comprehension as well as vocabulary. Close reading of the text is key to your success in this class.
