授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course explores globalization of American media industries in this world. Students will be introduced to the socio-cultural, political-economic, technological and textual issues surrounding the expansion and domination of American popular culture in a broad global and comparative context. Through the critical media-cultural perspective, this course help students analyze and understand how American media and popular culture impact and shape the future of globalization. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to (1) understand major concepts and trends in American media industries; (2) analyze the impact of American popular culture in a global context; (3) utilize knowledge of global media to explore different mass communication situations and processes in various countries (e.g. Japan). |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This course is taught in English. All classes will be held on campus in face-to-face classroom meetings. Porta II and University Web-Mail System will be used as the essential tools of communication. All assigned readings will be posted on Porta II or reserved in the library. Since this is an undergraduate seminar, students are expected to finish the required reading assignments before each class session. The lectures and class discussions will be based upon these assigned materials. Questioning, providing examples and stories, drawing connections, and making constructive arguments are all excellent ways to participate. |

事前?事後学修の内容 /Before After Study |
Students are expected to complete the assigned readings in preparation for in-class discussions and active participation. Students are expected to spend at least two hours each week for this preparation. There are two examinations: midterm and final for this class. Students are also required to make oral presentations in class. |
