授業の目的?内容 /Course Objectives |
This course explores the uses, gratifications, benefits, and limitations of media tools. This course employs empirical and rhetorical methods of analysis to help students contextualize the past, present, and future of media by interrogating media messages, examining source credibility and motives, and analyzing different interpretations of audiences. Students will reflect on the interrelationships between media, self, and society, developing critical reading skills and methodologies of media analysis. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to (1) differentiate various types of media and identify their purposes; (2) determine media source credibility and motives; (3) identify the social and cultural impact of media and demonstrate how media shapes and influences culture; (4) contextualize the past, present, and probable future of media and the interrelationships of media, self, and society. |

授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
This course is taught in English. All classes will be held on campus in face-to-face classroom meetings. Porta II and University Web-Mail System will be used as the essential tools of communication. All assigned readings will be posted on Porta II or reserved in the library. Since this is an undergraduate seminar, students are expected to finish the required reading assignments before each class session. The lectures and class discussions will be based upon these assigned materials. Questioning, providing examples and stories, drawing connections, and making constructive arguments are all excellent ways to participate. | ||||||||||

Students are expected to complete the assigned readings in preparation for in-class discussions and active participation. Students are expected to spend at least two hours each week for this preparation. There are two examinations: mid-term and final for this class. Students are also required to make oral presentations in class. |
