授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives |
This course, as outlined in the Graduate School's Diploma Policy (DP), involves repeated presentations and discussions aimed at developing the ability to “critically analyze existing research, formulate original research questions, and produce academically sophisticated papers” within the field of (cross-cultural) communication studies as part of cultural research. Furthermore, as outlined in the Curriculum Policy (CP), it aims to cultivate the abilities necessary for students to become independent researchers capable of conducting educational and research activities in the field of communication studies in general ans in intercultural communication studies in particular, as well as the skills required to become highly knowledgeable professionals such as university faculty or international organization staff. Specifically, we will integrate insights from media and culture studies and communication theory proposed in the English-speaking world. The first half will deepen understanding of cultural theory, while the second half will involve reading a collection of papers on cultural studies of 20th-century Disney films as an applied example. This approach allows students to grasp the role and positioning of cultural studies within its research history while also learning about the writing methods, thematic approaches, and strategies employed in cultural studies published in English (and the English-speaking world). |

This course is based on undergraduate-level knowledge of the instructor's philosophical stance and the nature of their research field. Therefore, students are required to have thoroughly read and understood the two designated reference books before attending the first class. During regular sessions, students will take the lead by providing a 30-minute oral summary of each assigned reading. These summaries must be delivered without the use of aids, such as written notes, manuscripts, smartphones, or tablets. Following the summary, students will engage in a dialogue with the instructor, who will facilitate the discussion through targeted questioning. At the end of the semester, students will deliver an oral presentation on the results of a mini-research project based on the course content. |

Pre-class Task (2 hrs.): Watch the relevant films and video materials meticulously at standard speed. Be prepared to outline the plot and explain the theoretical relevance in your own words. Post-class Task (2 hrs.): After class, organize the notes and memos taken during the dialogue session. Incorporate any newly recalled questions or insights to prepare for the next class. Furthermore, connect these reflections to your ideas for upcoming presentations and your research project. |

(1) Participation and Contribution (50%): Evaluation is based on active engagement in dialogue, the quality of 30-minute oral summaries, and preparation for each session. (2) Final Research Project (50%): Comprising the end-of-year research report and the corresponding oral presentation. |
